 ABOUT

I have been an iMac user since 2008. 2008 iMac was delivered with an ergonomic remote control (Apple Remote, white plastic model) and equipped with an infrared receiver. This remote could control integrated software like Front Row, iTunes, QuickTime Player, DVD Player or VLC.

In 2011, I changed for a new iMac, still equipped with an infrared receiver but the remote had to be purchased separately. This remote control (Apple Remote aluminium) is a state of the art of ergonomics and design.

In 2012, I changed again for a new iMac, It was no longer equipped with an infrared receiver, so it could not use the Apple Remote.
I wanted to use the Apple Remote so I found a spare part infrared receiver of a MacBook. I build the integration in a USB stick. The system worked perfectly, but remainded cumbersome for permanent use on MacBooks.

Early in 2016, I decided to design my own receiver, with microcontroller and integrated firmware. The first prototype was on a prototyping board, with crossing electronic components. The receiver worked perfectly. It was also able to decode low-cost remotes, compatible with Apple TV 1/2/3, which do not work on an Apple original receiver. Also, consumption and standby current of the receiver was much lower than the original model. (Some other compatible receivers do not support the standby current, this is not good for MacBook batteries!)

I built a new prototype with SMD components with wired connections, integrated to a USB stick. I was back to the same point, same footprint as the integration of MacBook spare parts, but personal design.

Then, going further, I created a PCB, professionally manufactured, equipped with SMD components. The challenge was to achieve the smallest possible receiver. I managed to produce a 18 x 11 mm receiver. New size from September 2018: 15 x 11 mm.

From the end of 2017, a USB Type C version is available for the new MacBook and MacBook Pro.

In 2019, a USB Type C version with a white plastic enclosure was launched.

In early 2021, a USB Type A version with a white plastic enclosure was launched.

In 2022, strass versions are available on request.
